Since Jan. was full of warmer (than usual) weather, a potential blizzard, and getting rid of all the Christmas candy, lets kick off February in a BIG way! Dental health month is a time where our oral health comes to the spotlight. Good oral health is the most important thing someone can do for themselves, since it is the gateway to your internal body. Things you eat, touch, taste, smell, all have a way to your mouth (even when you don’t know it). YUCK!

It is SUPER important to keep (or start!) healthy habits, including good brushing and flossing techniques.  The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), recommends that a person brushes at the minimum of twice daily, and use floss once daily. This sounds so minimal in words, but getting your kids to learn these habits can take some serious will-power! (we know!! don’t give up!!)

I sometimes tell kids that “you brush your teeth at night to keep your teeth, and you brush your teeth in the morning to keep your friends!!” They usually give me a giggle in response 🙂

TIP: The AAPD states that kids don’t usually have the development in their wrists (dexterity) to brush their teeth properly until they can tie their own shoes. This means, that yes, parents need to help their kids with brushing until they are getting those hard to reach areas consistently!

TIP: A pea sized amount of toothpaste is all your child needs! You will want to stick with NON-Fluoride toothpaste until your child can spit it out completely!! Too much fluoride ingested can cause discoloration to the developing permanent teeth!!
