DENTAL HEALTH MONTH

Since Jan. was full of warmer (than usual) weather, a potential blizzard, and getting rid of all the Christmas candy, lets kick off February in a BIG way! Dental health month is a time where our oral health comes to the spotlight. Good oral health is the most important thing someone can do for themselves, since it is the gateway to your internal body. Things you eat, touch, taste, smell, all have a way to your mouth (even when you don’t know it). YUCK!

It is SUPER important to keep (or start!) healthy habits, including good brushing and flossing techniques. Ā The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), recommends that a person brushes at the minimum of twice daily, and use floss once daily. This sounds so minimal in words, but getting your kids to learn these habits can take some serious will-power! (we know!! don’t give up!!)

I sometimes tell kids that “you brush your teeth at night to keep your teeth, and you brush your teeth in the morning to keep your friends!!” They usually give me a giggle in response šŸ™‚

TIP: TheĀ AAPD statesĀ that kids don’t usually have the development in their wrists (dexterity) to brush their teeth properly until they can tie their own shoes. This means, that yes, parents need to help their kids with brushing until they are getting those hard to reach areas consistently!

TIP: A pea sized amount of toothpaste is all your child needs! You will want to stick with NON-Fluoride toothpaste until your child can spit it out completely!! Too much fluoride ingested can cause discoloration to the developing permanent teeth!!

Merry Molar and Herbie

Here’s the update to what Merry Molar and Herbie were up to this year.. they enjoyed seeing all the paintings from our patients so much, they did their very own! Before they left, they sent us a letter saying how much fun they had watching over all of our boys and girls and can’t wait to come back next year!

We hope you enjoyed your Christmas break, now that the new year is in full swing! I know we had a awesome Christmas here at Casey Dental.

“..Making spirits bright”

Can you believe that Christmas is in just 18 days!? I CANT! We went from school starting back, sports events kicking off, Thanksgiving break, and in the blink of an eye, Christmas.

Christmas is such a special time of year, between the giving, decorating, colder weather, joyful spirits, and the ultimate reason of CHRIST-mas, I look forward to this time of year.

We had two special elves arrive in style last week to watch over all of our patients. We would like for you to meet Mary Molar and Herbie. This dynamic duo has been nothing but TROUBLE since they arrived! We’ll keep you posted on their adventures!Elf on the shelf arrival

No shave November

With November bringing Thanksgiving, family time, colder weather, and lots of fall activities, it also brings “No Shave November”.

The goal of NoShave November is to grow awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free. Donate the money you typically spend on shaving and grooming to educate about cancer prevention, save lives, and aid those fighting the battle.

Here is a little throwback to last year’s no shaveĀ November!!

Trick or Treat…Trick or Treat…Give me something good to EAT!

Halloween is approaching us and deciding what your costume will be this year is top priority for many! Spider-man, Ana, Elsa, Ninja Turtles, (probably more) Elsa and Iron man (to name a few) will soon be roaming the neighborhoods for trick or treat fun.

As parents, we want our kids to enjoy things in life, and sometimes that includes an overload of CANDY! SO, here’s some tips on staying cavity free this Halloween season!

  1. Stay away from the sticky and crunchy candies, ESPECIALLY if you have braces or any dental appliances, as this could pull off brackets or pull out appliances.
  2. BRUSH and FLOSS before bed, really good!! Don’t give those sugar bugs a free home.
  3. Don’t snack on it throughout the day. Sugar and Acid attacks your teeth for 20 minutes after you think the food is gone, therefore you don’t want a constant battle in your mouth all day!
  4. If you can’t brush after snacking, see if you can rinse your mouth out with water, this can help remove free floating debris from attaching to your tooth
  5. There is an ongoing study about how if you eat something sugary or sweet, eating cheese afterwards can balance out the PH level in your mouth and stop the acid/sugar attacks. This is also another option if you can’t brush right away.

We hope everyone stays SAFE, and has a very Happy Halloween!
